HubSpot import error: "Failed to find record for associations"
CRM contact cleanup
We clean and dedupe CRM import files and send back an import-ready CSV. Fully asynchronous - no meeting required.
You ran a multi-object import (for example contacts and companies in one file) and got Failed to find record for associations. Here is what HubSpot says it means, a free checker, and the steps we follow.
What the error means
HubSpot's import troubleshooting article lists this error for multi-object imports and gives the fix we quote in the steps below. The checker helps with the first part of that fix.
Source: HubSpot Knowledge Base, Review and troubleshoot record import errors, https://knowledge.hubspot.com/import-and-export/troubleshoot-import-errors (retrieved October 14, 2026). Check that page for the current wording before you re-import.
Check your CSV before you re-import
Pick the unique identifier column for one object (for example Email). We trim and lowercase values before comparing. Your file stays in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
How we fix it
- Open the file you imported and find the unique identifier column for each object (for example Email for contacts).
- Run the file through the checker above on that column. Every repeated value is a row HubSpot may not be able to associate.
- HubSpot's fix: confirm each unique identifier row in your spreadsheet contains a unique value.
- If you ran an Update only import, HubSpot also says to confirm the unique identifier values exist in the CRM.
- Fix the rows, then re-import only the corrected rows.
